So how do you keep your children AND the spaces they occupy clean and safe without using toxic chemicals and substances that can make them sick? It’s tricky. You want the confidence that it’s clean, i.e.: germs minimized and all stickiness removed. But you need to balance that with safe, i.e.: nothing toxic that they will lick, suck, breathe in, stick in their mouths, or feed to the family pet.

There is no federal regulation of chemicals in household cleaning products. You read that right – none. So how would you know what would be safe for your family? Your children? I bet one or more of eight hidden toxins may be somewhere in your house right now. Here’s how to clean without toxic chemicals so that you can get the kiddos’ rooms sparkling clean and smelling fresh without adding to your family’s toxic load. You’ll feel safe enough about each of these cleaning recipes, that you can get them to help! You’re completely on your own if you want them to keep it that way.
Until I had children, I’m certain that I judged other mothers – which BTW I don’t ever do anymore. WHY can’t she keep that child clean??? I bet that child’s room is a big hot mess! My child will NEVER be messy. She must not have taught her child to wipe her mouth, nose, hands…insert any other body part name here. Or maybe she never cleans her? But I digress. It’s clear that I had no concept how MESSY and DIRTY children can be…just because they are children!!!! And then I had two boys who love the outdoors! Need I say more about my lessons learned??? I think of mine as octopi…while I have two arms to clean up, they have eight to come right behind me and, well, you know.
As a child, my mother kept our house SPOT. LESS. I remember her stumbling out of my bathroom gagging on the fumes from the bleach that she mixed with Comet. She couldn’t consider it clean until she had completely lost the ability to breathe. Seriously. And even then she still went back in sometimes. For my family, I prefer to know it’s clean without almost loosing consciousness.
Replacing my toxic cleaning products has been pretty easy and inexpensive with simple ingredients I already had around the house plus my Young Living Essential Oils. A couple times a year, I make some serious cleaning inroads. I will cross the threshold of this terrifying mess my son calls a room and take you with me, step by step, to get it done! First things first! OPEN THE WINDOWS! Let some fresh air in. I love keeping all the doors and windows open in the spring. I feel like we’ve worked so hard all winter to keep the warm air in that the air has gotten stale and stagnant. The fresh air and breezes feel great! I like some great tunes and to diffuse a little something, maybe Joy, to lift my spirits. On second thought: maybe diffuse Valor if I need a little courage 🙂
I’m starting small: the closet. Here’s for a quick and easy spruce up of the closet:
* My boys have smelly feet and shoes. There’s no way around it. (Anyone who tells you they got it from me is a LIAR – plain and simple.) For each shoe that’s not smelling it’s best, I put a drop of Young Living Purification essential oil blend on a cotton ball and put one cotton ball in each shoe. This is especially needed for shoes that they wear without socks – fleece or sheepskin lined boots or slip ons.
* My boys aren’t yet old enough to have gym bags, but when they are, the bags will be easy enough to freshen up – just put a couple of drops of Purification, Lemon, Lavender, or Peppermint on a cotton ball and throw it in there.
* Hypothetically speaking, if I had found a crayon masterpiece on the wall behind the hanging clothes…. Hold on. I’ll be right back. Ah-hem. Ok, I’m back. As I was saying, IF, hypothetically, I had found a crayon Picasso on the back wall of the closet, I would use a couple of drops of Lemon essential oil on a cotton ball. Be sure to test an inconspicuous area (like a closet wall behind some clothes, for example) first. Bonus – the closet is now smelling super great!
Just in case you find anything sticky…a left over, half sucked piece of hard candy, for example… One to two drops of Lemon essential oil works perfectly as super inexpensive Goo Be Gone.
And now for the floors! We have carpet in our bedrooms, so when I vacuum, I sprinkle baking soda on the carpet to help pull out whatever odors are lurking. But since I’ve found essential oils, it’s seriously stepped my game up a notch. Add any scent you would like to a cup of baking soda to add a really sparkling, fresh, naturally clean scent. I love Lemon, Orange, Purification, or – especially in a bedroom – Lavender. I like a nicely scented room, so I use about 15-20 drops of oil to one cup of baking soda. You can use less oil – it’s completely your preference! Just mix the oil into the baking soda in a bowl and sprinkle onto your carpet. A good tip – a good old fashioned flour sifter will give you a nice even sprinkling across the room. Let sit for 30 minutes or so and vacuum as usual.
Every once in a while, the boys forget that they aren’t allowed to have food upstairs. Boys with food can mean only one thing: crumbs. Especially in the south, food crumbs can mean only one thing: bugs. Just yuck.
Fortunately, your essential oils can help. Lavender does a great job of repelling moths and other insects. Peppermint is also a wonderful pest repellent. I would choose depending on where I thought the critters might be attracted: a dresser drawer would call for Lavender and anywhere else, I would likely choose Peppermint. But it’s up to you! Again, just a drop or two on a cotton ball and put the cotton ball where you need it.
So, there you have it! Your little munchkins now have both a clean and safe place to return to. Aren’t you the mama bomb today?? Pat yourself on the back! If you haven’t started your journey with essential oils, now is the perfect time.
